Because

Map arguments with your AI assistant

Paste a passage into Claude or ChatGPT and ask for a map. Because draws the argument as a map you can open, edit and comment on, and your assistant revises it from what you change and say.

1. Connect your assistant

You do this once. After that, every new chat can use Because.

Claude

  1. Press the button below. Sign in to Claude if it asks.
  2. Claude shows Add custom connector with Because filled in. Press Continue, then Add, leaving the other choices as they are.
  3. Press Connect. A Because page opens: press Allow.
  4. Claude asks before it uses Because. So that it does not ask every time, choose Always allow for each group of tools on the page that follows, or when Claude first asks in a chat.

Works on every Claude plan, including the free one (which allows one custom connector), on the web and in the Claude desktop app. On a Team or Enterprise plan, an owner of the organization adds it first, under Organization settings, Connectors.

ChatGPT

  1. On the web, open chatgpt.com/plugins, press Add, and choose Add custom MCP server.
  2. For the name, type Because. For the server URL, paste:
    https://ai.philmaps.com/mcp
  3. Leave authentication on OAuth, tick I understand and want to continue, and press Create as a plugin.
  4. When ChatGPT asks you to connect, a Because page opens: press Allow.

ChatGPT offers custom servers on some plans only. If you do not see Add custom MCP server, your plan does not include it yet.

Other assistants

Because works with any assistant that can connect to a remote MCP server, among them Claude Code, Codex, Gemini, Le Chat, Perplexity, Cursor and VS Code. Its address is:

https://ai.philmaps.com/mcp

2. Map an argument

  1. Start a new chat, paste the passage, and ask your assistant to use Because. For example:
Use Because to map the argument in this passage:
  2. Your assistant drafts the map and shows it in the chat. Press Open the map to work on it there, or Open in a new tab. Where an assistant cannot show it, it gives you a link instead.
  3. Change anything directly, or select a box and press C to leave a comment for your assistant.
  4. Press Send feedback when you have finished, and your assistant is told in the chat. (In Claude, press Enter to send the message it puts in the box.) Your assistant reads your changes and comments, answers them, and revises the map.

3. Tell us what you think

Because is new to AI assistants, and it is the first tool of its kind. If a map goes wrong, or goes well, please tell us. In the map, open the Feedback menu and choose Tell the Because team, or ask your assistant to send the Because team a report. Either way the map comes with it, so we can see what happened.

Each map has a private link: anyone you give the link to can open and edit that map. See Privacy for what Because keeps. The Because editor also works on its own, without an assistant.
